A la Recherche de Fidel

Dulce Vidad Habanera

Looking for Fidel

What Kind of Victor
I share the same birthday with Fidel Castro. This might a reason good enough to feel an attraction for a man otherwise hated for reasons good and bad, but demonized because he dared challenge the powerful.

Further more, my work on the human condition, and the other one on politics, American, French, global politics wanted me to try to capture a good photograph of El Commandante.

I had been living in the States for several years already, could almost feel the perfume of Cuban sugar canes in the breeze, and in 2003, I could not take it anymore, and embarked for a journey to the sinful island.

I was going to Cuba in July because their Independance Day is on July 26, and that day Fidel speaks somewhere. That year it was in Santiago. I was there, but for all my sweat, patience, determination: nothing. I was never able to approach him, glance at him, just hear him in the loud speakers. Meeting Fidel cannot be improvised, as I explain in Monsieur Contraste.

Here are the photographs of 12 days in Cuba, looking for Fidel, among other things. What is here is still incomplete, I am currently working on finishing this, which will take a little more time. Please let me know if you have an urgent need.
